Using Validation
Validation checks the translation for the following error categories,
or types of validation:
Duplicate dialog hotkey
Validation checks whether the same hotkey was assigned for more than
one item within a dialog
Duplicate menu hotkey
Validation checks whether the same hotkey was assigned for more than
one item within a menu
Inconsistent format string
Validation checks whether format specifiers of the original element
are preserved in the target element. The symbols %d and %s cannot be omitted
in the target element.
Example: The element "You entered: %s." should be translated
into Hindi as "Likh liya gaya: %s".
Invalid amount of new line characters
Validation checks whether the amount of new line characters (marked
as /n) in the target element is the same as in the original element. This
inconsistency might cause incorrect displays or malfunction of the application
Invalid amount of tabulation characters
Validation checks whether the amount of tabulation characters of the
original element are preserved in the target element
Invalid amount of white space characters
Validation checks whether the amount of space characters at the beginning
or end of the line in the target element is the same as in the original
element. Sometimes several parts of the text are pieced together. In this
case, the incorrect amount of white spaces may cause malfunction
Invalid hotkey
Validation checks whether the ampersand is followed by a correct symbol
Invalid hotkey position
Validation checks whether the ampersand is not placed at the end of
the element
Missing colon
Validation checks whether the colon at the end of the original element
is preserved in the target element
Missing periods
Validation checks whether the period at the end of the original element
is preserved in the target element
Translation memory mismatch
Sometimes the translation of the element entered in the translation
editor does not correspond to the translation memory imported from a .tmx
file (See Translation memory). In this case, you have to consider which
variant of translation is correct.
How to apply the validation
To apply the validation, select the appropriate resource in the Navigation
panel, point to Tools in the shortcut
menu and then click Validate.
You can also select Validate in
the Tools menu.
In the Validate options dialog,
check the validation types you want to apply (click All
to check all boxes or None to
reset) and then click OK.
If validation finds errors in the translation, they will be listed in
the output window. Double-click the error message (or right-click it and
then select Go to) to mark the
corresponding element in the translation editor. It is advisable to eliminate
the inconsistencies and go through the validation process again.
